EMS Training Opportunity with IEMC PDF Print E-mail

FEMA provides great training opportunities for emergency service and other public and private entities that we all rely on in an emergency or disaster.  However it appears to this writer that EMS providers do not take advantage of this wonderful resource.

A case in point is the Integrated Emergency Management Course (IEMC) conducted at FEMA’s National Emergency Training Center in Maryland.  I have been a contract Instructor in this course for two years.  During this time, I have observed very few EMS folks attending.  We see elected officials, public works, fire, police, media and many others from all over the nation and even from other countries, but rarely EMS professionals.

The IEMC provides participants the opportunity to work with many disciplines to address disaster-related issues.  A lecture and practical exercise format is used that prepares the students for the “big one” exercise during the 5-day course.  The eye-opening and thought-provoking activities allow participants to bring a heightened awareness of the importance of other organizations and the importance of working as a TEAM with others.  Communication and “thinking out of the box,” is encouraged.

While this program can provide education and experience, it also provides an opportunity to network with a diverse group from many backgrounds, experiences, and even cultures.  Additionally, other professions and disciplines can recognize the importance and even presence of EMS.

I encourage EMS folks to attend the IEMC and other activities so that other first responders from public works, social services, and media, to police, fire, and elected officials can see EMS in action and understand the needs and the importance of EMS in their own and your communities.

Check www.training.fema,gov/EMIWeb/IEMC for the Integrated Emergency Management Course.  Hit “home” from this web site to see other training opportunities.  http://training/fema.gov/apply will give you the form to fill out for admission plus tips for completing the form.  This form must go through the State Emergency Management Agency for pre-approval.  Let me know if you would to attend and I will try to assist you in the application process.
